Monday Club

Since 1984

Monday Club helps Southern California companies improve their business plan presentations and meet experts who can help them achieve their objectives.

Monday Club is a group of eleven hundred High-Tech Executives and Business Professionals, in Southern California, who meet once a month to help start-up companies improve their business plans. Monday Club Members have extensive experience in working with high-tech firms. They know what it takes to make a good presentation, and they know what investors are looking for. Some, but not all, of the members are investors.

“Since 1984, Monday Club has offered a unique opportunity for inventors and entrepreneurs to meet each month with investors, lawyers and other professional advisers of start-up ventures. Dr. Fred Haney founded the Monday Club and presides over the meetings. The positive advice freely offered to the presenting inventors and entrepreneurs has enabled many start-ups to avoid mistakes and succeed. Dr. Haney has played a key role in advancing the establishment and success of high tech companies in Southern California.”

“I have been an active member of Monday Club since 2005. I retired in 2003 and became acquainted with Fred through a mutual third party and began attending his sessions monthly.  I soon discovered we were mutual alumni with two great companies — Xerox and TRW —  had Ph.D.’s, and lived in close proximity to one another for many years…Fred is tireless and generous in his pursuit of quality suggestions to startup companies. He has cultivated quite a professional following and connection Rolodex in the process, which is always helpful.”

—Don Lavoie

Ph.D, President & CEO, Developmetrics

“The Monday Club meetings were really helpful to Synova. Unbeknownst to us, one of the lab directors from one of the labs we had been in talks with was present and we were able to tell Synova’s story with very positive results. Monday Club also helped us to establish relationships with some very experienced and knowledgeable folks. We’ve had some talks with a few of them about board positions, strategic partnerships and investment. Nothing finalized yet, but hopefully in the very near future. Thanks!”

—John Chi

President, Synova Life Sciences

Monday Club History

”A venture capitalist’s lifeline is his connection to the high tech community.”

—Fred M. Haney, Ph.D.

Monday Club was founded in 1984, by Fred M. Haney, Ph.D.

In 1984, Fred was managing 3i Ventures, one of the largest and most successful venture capital firms in Southern California. The original idea of Monday Club was to expand 3i Ventures’ network of contacts — for access to investment opportunities and to people who could help build successful businesses.

When Monday Club adopted a monthly format of having two companies present their business plans, interest grew and the membership expanded to over fourteen hundred people in Orange County, South Bay of Los Angeles (Torrance), and Santa Monica.

Dr. Fred Haney is the founder and President of the Venture Management Co., a firm that provides assistance to high-tech companies. He is the author of “The Fundable Startup: How Disruptive Companies Attract Capital,” published on February 6, 2018, by Select Books of New York.

Interested in Joining?

Monday Club is a private club with new members coming in on a referral basis, however, if you live in Southern California and are interested and think you are a good fit, please send you resume and reason for wanting to join to FredMHaney[at]gmail.com

We have three chapters:

  • Santa Monica, CA
  • South Bay (Torrance), CA
  • Orange County, CA

Each chapter holds a monthly meeting at which two high-tech start-up companies make 35-minute business plan presentations.

The Monday Club members evaluate the presentations and:

  • Give extensive feedback.
  • Suggest alternate business strategies, if appropriate.
  • Network with the presenting companies and help them meet people or corporate partners who can help the companies meet their objectives.

Periodic status reports by past presenters show that Monday Club has been extremely effective in helping companies to improve their business strategies, find people who can help in different ways, and raise capital.

Some presenting companies have “graduated” to Tech Coast Angels or other investment groups to receive financing.
